Mandatory Declarations for British Travellers (72h Pre-Arrival)
Alongside an approved e-Visa, all British travellers must complete the integrated customs and health declaration via the All Indonesia Arrival Card or Electronic Customs Declaration (e-CD) within 72 hours of arrival (see our e-CD Customs Guide). Arrivals in Bali must also pay the mandatory 150,000 IDR (approx. £8 GBP) regional levy via Love Bali.
UK-Indonesia Diplomatic & Travel Relations
Policy ContextThe United Kingdom and the Republic of Indonesia maintain a dynamic Strategic Partnership. Bolstered by post-Brexit economic frameworks such as the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO), this relationship focuses on green energy transitions, deep higher-education ties, and expanding bilateral tourism.
With over 350,000 British nationals visiting the archipelago annually, full "British Citizen" passport holders enjoy Tier-1 eligibility across Indonesia's digital border network—including online e-VOA issuance and biometric e-Gate clearance at Ngurah Rai (Bali DPS) and Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta CGK) airports.
Bilateral Roadmap
A New Strategic Partnership Between the UK and Indonesia
The UK Government and Indonesia have launched a comprehensive Strategic Partnership Roadmap. This agreement deepens cooperation across trade, investment, and digital border mobility for British tourists, business visitors, and expatriates.

Travellers planning stays longer than 60 days or non-tourism activities should apply for the 60-day Visitor Visa (Index C1) before departure.

- Passport Condition: Indonesian border officers frequently refuse entry to travellers with water-damaged pages, torn covers, or lifted laminate on the bio-data page.

FCDO Border Compliance & Local Law Warnings
Important Notice for British Nationals: Strict Indonesian Enforcement
Based on official FCDO Indonesia travel advice, British travellers should pay close attention to four compliance rules that frequently affect UK visitors:
Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs)
Indonesia's online e-Visa portal only accepts applications made with a full, standard passport—holders of emergency or temporary travel documents cannot apply online. If you need to travel on a UK ETD, the FCDO advises contacting the Indonesian Embassy in London beforehand to verify entry eligibility.
Overstay Fines (1,000,000 IDR / Day)
Ensure your visa is approved before you arrive (a visa approved after entry is invalid). Overstaying your 30-day e-VOA incurs a mandatory fine of 1,000,000 IDR (approx. £50 GBP) per day, plus risk of detention and deportation (FCDO overstay guidance).
Private Villa Police Registration
Hotels automatically register foreign guests with Indonesian police. However, if you stay in private accommodation or an unregistered villa, you must register your presence with the nearest local police station or face a fine of up to 5,000,000 IDR (approx. £250 GBP).
Influencers, Volunteering & Medication
The B1 e-VOA is not valid for volunteering, influencer work, or creating sponsored commercial online content (which requires a specialist visa such as C5A). Additionally, UK prescriptions such as ADHD stimulants, codeine, and medical cannabis are strictly controlled or illegal in Indonesia.

UK to Indonesia Flight Routes & Transit Rules
Because there are currently no direct non-stop commercial flights between the United Kingdom and Indonesia (average journey time 16–19 hours), British travellers should calculate their 6-month passport validity and visa arrival date based on the calendar date their connecting flight lands in Bali (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK)—normally +1 day after departing the UK.
Middle Eastern One-Stop Hubs
Departures from London Heathrow (LHR), Gatwick (LGW), Manchester (MAN), Birmingham (BHX), and Edinburgh (EDI) connect daily via Gulf hubs into Bali and Jakarta:
- • Via Dubai (DXB) with Emirates
- • Via Doha (DOH) with Qatar Airways
ASEAN Transit Hubs
Popular for UK travellers combining Bali with Singapore, Malaysia, or Thailand on a multi-country itinerary:
